Wondering if you can get tennis elbow from lifting weights?
At RRP Physiotherapy, we believe Lateral Epicondylalgia, more commonly known as “tennis elbow”, is the most frequent elbow injury seen among those who carry out resistance training. (And you might be surprised to learn that only a very small percentage of people actually develop the condition from playing tennis – despite its name!)
Think you could be experiencing tennis elbow as a result of your training? Our team has years of experiencing managing and resolving symptoms associated with the condition. Plus, it’s our aim to have you feeling like your normal self again and doing what you love as quickly as possible.
In this blog, we cover some of the essentials, including:
- What tennis elbow is,
- Common symptoms and causes, and
- How RRP physiotherapy approaches treatment for the condition.
What is Tennis Elbow?
Tennis Elbow is a form of ‘Tendinopathy’ that leads to arm and elbow pain.
These types of injuries are essentially an overuse/repetitive use injury that occurs at the tendon portion of a muscle.
Tennis Elbow Symptoms
- Pain on the outside area of the elbow,
- Radiating pain into the forearm, wrist and upper arm regions.
Some sufferers also report weakness and difficulty gripping.
Recent research has found this condition lacks inflammation; and therefore, provides insight as to why symptoms from Tennis Elbow can linger for weeks and months.
Causes of Tennis Elbow
At RRP Physiotherapy, we carry out a thorough assessment and use our expertise to identify the cause of your Tennis Elbow.
Usually, there is some recent, recognisable increase in use of the muscles of your forearm/wrist.
Other factors include, shoulder stability and control, diet and sleep, which other therapists may not discuss with you.
Treatment of Tennis Elbow
When it comes to treating the condition, RRP Physiotherapy prides itself on not providing the ‘easy fix’ and telling you to rest. Instead, we prefer to find other strategies that allow you to keep performing tasks that you want and need to do.
We combine this approach of ‘load management’ with numerous other techniques. This method gets the majority of our clients back to what they love doing in the most time-efficient manner:
Those other techniques include:
- Manual therapy – joint manipulation, massage
- Dry Needling
- Taping techniques
