Do you find that you’re prone to a sprained or rolled ankle? Unfortunately, if you’ve sprained an ankle in the past and the injury isn’t rehabilitated properly, you may be at risk of re-injury in the future.
The methods used to treat your sprain will differ depending on the severity of the injury, however, a physio can play an instrumental part in your recovery.
We explain more about ankle sprains and their treatment below.
What is an Ankle Sprain?
An ankle sprain occurs when one or more ligaments that hold your ankle together are stretched or torn.
This type of injury occurs when a person rolls and twists their ankle awkwardly inwards or outwards.
There are three grades of ankle sprains with a grade 1 being a slight sprain, a grade 2 sprain being a moderate injury, and a grade 3 sprain being the most severe as the ligament is torn from the bone.
Those who experience a grade three sprain are likely to experience unpleasant swelling, bruising and pain, as well as loss of function and stability.
Ankle Sprain Treatment
The best treatment option will depend on the severity of the sprain; however, most people will follow rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE) treatment protocol immediately after an injury has occurred.
After initial first aid, you should seek personalised advice from a qualified health professional about what treatment will suit your situation best.
Some people who’ve sustained serious sprains may require crutches or a moon boot when they’re able to begin moving again.
Others may benefit from strapping or an ankle brace for added support.
Physio for Ankle Sprain
A physiotherapist can develop a tailored treatment and exercise program to strengthen your ankle as part of the rehabilitation process.
It could include:
- Education
- Bracing/taping
- Balance exercises such as balance boards
- Strengthening exercises
- Jumping on trampoline when able
- Walking on both level and uneven surfaces
- Hopping, running and higher intensity movements can be added when able.
The activity level and difficulty of movements will increase as the ankle’s load carrying capacity improves.
